Characterisation of the cartilage/bone interface utilising reflectance spectroscopy

چکیده
Optical reflection spectra of the cartilage/bone interface from hip joints of cows were studied. When comparing to ultrasonic measurement, it was found that cartilage thickness could be extracted using optical reflectance spectroscopy. For thicker cartilage layers, a high reflection for the wavelengths 400-600 was seen, and for thinner cartilage layers, the characteristic spectra of blood and bone dominated. The optical reflectance spectra may be used to characterise cartilage, and specifically cartilage thickness, in connection with in situ diagnosis or autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). Keywords-Cartilage, reflection spectroscopy, ultrasound, autologous chondrocyte implantation

In vitro model of bone to facilitate measurement of adhesion forces and super-resolution imaging of osteoclasts.
To elucidate processes in the osteoclastic bone resorption, visualise resorption and related actin reorganisation, a combination of imaging technologies and an applicable in vitro model is needed. Nanosized bone powder from matching species is deposited on any biocompatible surface in order to form a thin, translucent, smooth and elastic representation of injured bone. Osteoclasts cultured on t...

The information from spectral reflectance of articular cartilage has been related to the integrity of the tissue. This study explores more in detail the interrelations between the cartilage composition, structure and mechanical properties, and optical spectral reflectance. Using human osteochondral samples the reflectance spectral images of articular cartilage were captured and analyzed by usin...

Bone has a capability to repair itself when it is fractured. Repair involves the generation of intermediatetissues, such as fibrous connective tissue, cartilage and woven bone, before final bone healing can occur. Theprocess of cartilage-to-bone transition (CBT) is a key for the achievement of rigid bone healing duringfracture repair. We tested this potential for elastic cartilage using a long ...
